As the Government shutdown continued into its third week Wednesday, President Obama attempted to ease federal workers’ anxiety by releasing a statement on the impact of the shutdown, on a day when he was headed to visit the Federal Aviation Administration’s headquarters in Washington. “American workers have been hard at work for three weeks, fulfilling their most important obligations to our fellow citizens — and the government must continue to pay those obligations in order to keep our economy strong,” the president wrote.
In fact, the president’s statement was a distortion at best. As The Washington Post reported on Oct. 5, “The federal government produced just $80 billion in goods and services in the first nine months of 2012 — roughly 0.5 percent of gross domestic product — compared with $143 billion in 2010. At the same time, federal spending as a percentage of GDP is on track to decline to 3 percent from 3.1 percent in 2012. The real federal contribution in 2012 is considerably lower than that.” The federal government is not paying the bills; rather, it is running deficits that will have to be paid off by future generations — unless an amnesty is granted.
For the government to discharge its obligations, it must function as a business, and if it doesn’t, it can’t function.
As it has largely dodged its responsibilities, the government is hurtling toward a crisis in a country that should be spending as if there is no recession, not a “recovery.”
All this has created a huge panic. In San Antonio, for example, according to a report in the Huffington Post, “The last time business was slow at the American Bank Center, business was slow in general.” Though the center was almost packed, the truth is the vast majority of San Antonio businesses are struggling, just as most businesses have been struggling since Reagan fired the air traffic controllers in 1981.
Thus the situation for federal workers is not so much that they are working without being paid, or that their spouses and children aren’t going to be fed. It’s that all of the businesses that pay the
