Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.
AutoCAD can create 2D and 3D drawings, floors plans and sections, technical drawings (floor plans, sections, and elevations), and 3D drawings (sketches). It also has features for mechanical, civil, electrical, architectural, and structural drafting, including a plugin-based rendering engine for photo-realistic rendering. AutoCAD is a general-purpose CAD program, and is used in all industries and disciplines for designing, drafting, or visualizing plans, drawings, and technical documentation.
In 2018, when it was announced that the United States Census Bureau would be phasing out its use of AutoCAD, it also announced plans to transition the software’s license to the public domain.
AutoCAD is a continuation of several programs Autodesk started before AutoCAD, such as Autoplane. The first version of AutoCAD was released on December 8, 1982, for the Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, IBM PC, TRS-80, and Tandy TRS-100. The first versions of AutoCAD were graphical, but by 1983, users were able to connect to a mainframe at the U.S. Bureau of the Census to submit their drawings. A beta version of the software was offered to the public in November 1982.
Prior to release, the software was tested by individuals including both Autodesk staff and external testing. In April 1983, there were about 4,000 copies in use, including around 1,400 copies used by the Bureau of the Census. By March 1984, there were around 20,000 copies in use and Autodesk was “looking to hire” additional programmers, and by March 1987, there were around 100,000 copies of AutoCAD in use, an order of magnitude higher than the number estimated by the Bureau of the Census. In September 1984, Autodesk released an updated version of AutoCAD for the Apple II, which included features such as merging/splitting blocks, and improved mathematical calculations and plotting capabilities, and by 1986, about 10,000 copies of the Apple II version were sold.
Newer versions of AutoCAD were released as new models of Apple computers were released, including the Apple IIGS.
In August 2012, Autodesk purchased the rights to AutoCAD for $100 million, and in September 2014, Autodesk acquired Building Design Service of America to give customers access to

# **7.4** **Windows**
The Windows platform on which AutoCAD is primarily deployed and maintained is not a programming environment. Microsoft Windows provides a graphical user interface (GUI), and requires programmers to use the Win32 API. AutoLISP, Visual LISP, and.NET programming environments are not directly compatible with the Windows platform. VBA is a Microsoft Windows scripting language and can be used for automation within Windows applications. In order to run AutoLISP scripts on Windows, AutoCAD must be installed and configured to support VBA, which is not a part of AutoCAD. ObjectARX is also a Windows class library and a component of AutoCAD Architecture for.NET.
# **7.5** **Tablet PCs**
While many people have been able to create fully functional tablets for a variety of markets, most have been purpose-built devices that not only lack the features of the smaller, standard laptop form factor but also fall short of being useful as a personal computing device. For instance, some of the size of the iPad have made it more suitable as a personal digital assistant (PDA) than as a PC, whereas the form factor of the Microsoft Surface pro is similar to that of a standard laptop. AutoCAD for Surface pro runs only on the Surface Pro, and the associated software is provided by Microsoft.
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the various ways of creating custom AutoCAD applications using the APIs discussed. The APIs are discussed in the context of generating forms in the AutoCAD command line, a topic that is included in the Help system.
