When you create an image in Photoshop, it’s named after the original file, such as _final_product.psd_. If you use a naming scheme like _final_product_layer_one_, another layer can be created within the Photoshop file and its name can include the name of the first layer plus a number. This provides the user with a way to know the order in which a series of layers have been created, as shown in the next image.
The word “layer” is a bit vague. Photoshop layers are like the bookends on an image. They span the top and bottom of the image (and any object in the image), one layer per page. In fact, an image can include only one layer at a time, and if it contains multiple layers, they are stacked to create a single image that has the appearance of more than one page.
Unlike most page-based publishing formats, such as Quark, Adobe Photoshop uses a raster-based image. That is, no one pixel is represented by a single dot of color but by a pattern of dots that cover the entire image. This is why most people associate a Photoshop layer with a page of a book.
The most basic layer in Photoshop is the background layer, which is also called the default layer. It is normally the first layer that you create (although after the background, you may want to create a new layer on the first page).
The size of the layer defines the area the layer covers. To create a larger layer, you need to make a copy of the current layer. Click the Clone Stamp tool and press Ctrl+Alt+D, or go to Image, Layers, and choose the Clone Stamp tool. Click a point on the canvas (the empty area of your image). An outline or polygon is drawn (or you can use the Ellipse tool) around the point, and a layer is created within the Photoshop file that’s named with the new layer’s name, plus the word `clone`, as shown in Figure 3-1.
Photoshop’s layers can also be named according to the layer’s contents, with a prefix or suffix added to the layer name. You may want to name layers according to the content they hold.

Montana has a new key player in the race for the White House, Gov. Steve Bullock.
Bullock, a two-term governor from the state that Republicans call “too red to reform,” is looking to gain traction with voters as he pushes to win the Democratic nomination for president.
But for Bullock, the battleground has shifted from Iowa, which holds the first caucus, to neighboring New Hampshire, where he was announced as the first candidate to enter the race.
Bullock’s campaign has been gaining traction this past week. His economic message of an improving but still-struggling economy, and his emphasis on fighting climate change, is resonating with voters in New Hampshire, a key state in a swing state and the most important primary for Democrats this cycle.
As Bullock is reaching out to a broader audience in the crowded Democratic field, however, he is still struggling to generate the same level of enthusiasm that Bernie Sanders is attracting among progressives, including many who are looking for a candidate to challenge Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
A Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll released last week showed that the four candidates considered front-runners in the state did not substantially improve their standing, with the exception of Sanders. He gained seven percentage points among Iowans who said they will vote early or caucus on Feb. 1, to 42 percent, good for second place.
But Bullock is still lagging behind. He gained four percentage points, to 15 percent, from those who said they are likely to vote for him in Iowa. That is the lowest level of support for Bullock.
The Iowa poll showed that former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley surged on the back of high expectations for his candidacy, entering the primary at 2 percent and leaving the poll at 17 percent.
Polling shows that Sanders is driving the conversation among liberals, and that is where the Bullock campaign has the most work to do.
“I’m not running to be a spokesperson on climate change or a feminist,” Bullock told reporters. “I’m running because I’ve got a plan to get a job.”
